Sinusitis also known as sinus is the inflammation of the sinuses or spaces behind the nose. Lack of early treatment may result in chronic condition. Inflammation of the paranasal sinuses often follows the common cold, influenza, and other general infections. Germs that would normally be eliminated from the body may sometimes find their way into these little sinuses or chambers on each side of the nasal passages. Trouble may be due to inadequate drainage resulting from a deviated septum, or perhaps the presence of polyps. Any chronic infection within the nose may lead to sinusitis. This is a terribly annoying and painful situation to endure so I will examine methods of how you can relieve sinus pressure.

Some proven natural cure for sinus infection Drinking plenty of water and hot fluids to dilute the mucus can hydrate the mucus and reduce the symptoms to some extent. Tea and other clear beverages also help. Taking foods rich in antioxidants such as berries, tomatoes, broccoli, red grapes, spinach and garlic strengthen the immune system and prevent sinus infection.Applying moist heat on the face can relieve pain. Steam can also help in loosening the mucus allowing it to drain.Saline water irrigation is a good way to wash away the infected mucus during sinus infection. Nasal irrigators are used with warm water as a natural cure for sinus infection.Grapefruit seed extract is a powerful herbal antibiotic. It can be used with a neti pot or spray frequently to clear congestion in the nasal area. This is a very effective natural cure for sinus infection.Drinking large qualities of apple cedar vinegar (ACV) helps in thinning the mucus.Eucalyptus is a fragrant herb that can soothe sore throats. It has antiseptic properties for shrinking swollen sinus passages. Drinking eucalyptus tea also helps.Capsules made of Licorice root helps reduce inflammation and stimulates the immune system working as a natural cure for sinus infection.Peppermint has anti inflammatory properties. Drinking peppermint tea or inhaling its steam helps eases breathing.Add dried lemon leaves to boiling water and strain and drink the warm tea. It helps in fighting off the virus or bacteria. It can also be used as a gargle to relieve sore throat.Chamomile tea taken before bed time promotes better sleep calming the body and mind.Cold can be controlled successfully with Vitamin C and zinc in the form of lozenge or capsule.Oil pulling is an Indian remedy which can clear sinus congestion within a few minutes.

There are also many treatments which are directly distributed into the sinus cavities. These treatments are generally meant to help moisten the cilia so that it can flush out the trapped mucus and bacteria. Nasal sprays are commonly used and can be prescribed or purchased over the counter. The nasal sprays may offer some relief to the lower part of the sinuses but often times may not help the infection since their particle sizes are too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection. The same holds true for a treatment called irrigation which distributes saline up to the sinus cavities. Irrigation is also very messy and generally unsuccessful in offering relief.

Herbal treatment for sinus also involves Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) which augments every phase of immune-system activity. It boosts the production and storage of interferon, matter that is warns the body to attacking viruses and bacteria and stimulates cells to initiate their resistance, and to boost interferon's effects in combating illnesses such as the common cold.

Such individuals have an underlying sinus disorder which is exacerbated by episodes of acute infection. In these individuals, we believe that treatment must be more than two weeks and include broad-spectrum antibiotics. Antibiotics are effective only in treating bacterial illnesses. If antibiotics fail to relieve the chronic sinusitis and accompanying headaches, which it often does, endoscopic or image-guided surgery may be the recommended treatment. As antibiotics come with any side effects, the simple solution on how to treat sinus infection is by using a natural antibiotic that is proven to work. The wild oil of oregano and eucalyptus can be used as an effective sinus infection treatment that possesses powerful anti-bacterial properties.

Natural nutritional approaches are also entailed. It's about time to drink plenty of liquids, especially water. A glass of lemon juice and water first thing in the morning may also help thin mucus.

First and foremost, we need to remember what foods may cause or aggravate our sinus problems. Milk and other dairy products, sugars, fatty foods, lack of green vegetables are mucus-forming foods. You must learn to control intake of these food groups if you are already at the onset of serious sinus infections. Common food allergies like wheat, eggs, citrus, corn, and peanut butter may also cause sinus problems.

Doctors conduct test to ascertain whether the headache is sinus headache or it is migraine or tension headache. Physical examination for congestion, transillumination i.e. shining a light through the sinuses or in some cases x-rays, a CT scan, or an MRI is done to check for sinusitis.

Air-filled cavities in the forehead, cheekbones, and at the back of the bridge of the nose are called sinuses. Thin mucus is produced by the sinus that drains out of the canal of the nose. When a sinus becomes inflamed, due to an allergic reaction, a tumor, or an infection, the inflammation will thwart the steady flow of mucus and this results in a pain akin to that of a headache.

By knowing this types of sinusitis, we would also know what medicines we need to take, watch out our food intake and other activities that we could do in order to avoid getting sinusitis.

Nasal irrigation with salt water solution is one good way to unblock stuffed nasal passage. This is done through yogic practice. A ceramic pot, known as a 'neti pot', is filled with a warm salt-water solution and poured through the nose to clear out sinus congestion which is a ideal herbal treatment.

Herbal treatment for sinus like Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia), is useful if taken at the beginning of a cold or the flu. Echinacea is not an antibiotic; instead, it works by stimulating the production of white blood cells, speeding up their maturation within the lymphatic tissue, and speeding their movement to the spot of infection, where they help battle the intruders.

There are other enjoyable ways on relieving sinus problems, like taking a hot sauna for 20 minutes a day. Hot liquids and steaming face and head with eucalyptus may relieve congestion and sinus pressure.

Grape fruit seed extract is also very good for treating sinus. People with chronic sinus need to keep themselves warm and preferably have warm liquid intake. This will ease their discomfort.

I asked this question to a gentleman from the company that produces the Sinu-Clear laser equipment, a company called PhotoMedex. He said there are many reasons for so few surgeons using the procedure, and most seem to boil down to the reluctance of people, in this case sinus surgeons, to change. In fact PhotoMedex is emphasizing different product lines of medical laser equipment, and the gentleman I spoke with was not optimistic about growth aspects for this procedure. To me this is certainly a shame. I personally have only spoken to one person, Jason, who has undergone the procedure, but he is extremely enthusiastic. I hope to speak to others and get more inputs. I can only say that when someone who has had 3 other operations tries sinus laser surgery and says he has finally regained his sense of smell again after 15 years, then this is worth taking note of, at the very least.

The problems which may occur with acute Sinusitis' target=_blank>sinusitis may include cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, headache, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip. When the sinusitis infection lasts for twelve or more weeks it is known as chronic sinusitis and can have added problems such as loss of sense of taste and smell and fatigue may also be experienced. Other symptoms may also occur depending on which sinus cavity that the infection lies in.

Sometimes surgical drain of the mucous in the sinuses is also done to clear the inflammation. Alternative treatments like natural remedies, acupuncture and homeopathic medication are also given to treat sinus headaches. Even nasal steroid therapy is used to bring relief and clear inflammation.

Migraines usually are accompanied by light sensitivity unlike the sinus problems. Another clue is the need to lie down in a quiet dark room and not move around. Many times a migraine is only on one side of the head but sometimes it can be both. The specific medications used to treat migraines, such as triptans will not have an effect on a true sinusitis or sinus infection so that too can help diagnose the headache.

Another way to differentiate between the migraines and sinus headaches is through a CT of the sinuses or an MRI. If the results show clear sinuses, then the headaches are most probably migraines.

Sinus headache symptoms are so common that many people just shorten the phrase to "I have sinus." This can encompass anything from pain around the eyes and nose to runny nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes, sore throat, fever, chills and fatigue. The problem arises when the person has allergies and perhaps even migraine headaches. Then the situation is really muddled! Which is it: sinus infections, sinusitis or migraine?

Here is how you might be able to tell the difference. Let's start with sinus infections. This usually is an acute infection of the sinuses with fever, chills and yellow or green discharge from the nose. There is pain in the sinuses over the eyes, beneath the eyes and may even extend to pain in the upper teeth. The pain is constant and somewhat throbbing and usually worsens with bending over. When the discharge is colored then the infection is most probably bacterial but rarely it may be fungal.

In addition to Dr. Paley in Beverly Hills, CA, I found out about two other otolaryngologists who perform the Sinu-Clear sinus laser operation. One is Dr. Vincent Pisciotta in Biloxi, Mississippi, and the other is Dr. Robert Bonham in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Bonham also performs another new operation called Sinuplasty, which is similar to angioplasty but for the sinus cavities. I understand there may be a few other surgeons in the country who routinely perform the Sinu-Clear operation, and I intend to continue to research this and get the word out. Results will be posted on the blog and forum at http://www.postnasaldrip.net. I only wish I had heard about this sinus laser surgery procedure years ago. It sounds like it might have been more effective and certainly less painful than the operations I did have. If you are considering being one of the 300,000 people who have sinus operations in the U.S. alone, this procedure is certainly something to know about and consider as an option, even if it were to require travel.

A newer treatment that is used nasally is aerosolized medications. Aerosolized medications are used very much like nebulized asthma medications. These antibiotics, anti-fungals, and anti-inflammatories are broken down into a small particle size so that it can pass the inflammation and make its way up to the sinusitis infection. Generally a small amount of these medications are used which results in little to no side effects in the rest of the body.

Chronic sinusitis is more difficult to treat. If possible, the patient should see a doctor who specializes in nose and throat diseases. If this cannot be done, place hot, moist packs over the face and rotate the head from side to side slowly for several minutes. Gentle suction may then be applied to each nostril while the other is being kept closed. A soft bulb syringe is best for this purpose. This treatment should be repeated several times a day as needed. Patients should also avoid blowing the nose too often or too vigorously. When doing so, keep the mouth open and close on nostril at a time. If there is profuse postnasal drainage, a gargle of a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of soda in a glass of warm water may be used several times a day. A little of this may also be drawn up through the nasal passages or pumped in with a soft, rubber bulb syringe. Such measures will relieve sinus pressure the uncomfortable feeling and may help to clear up the sinus infection.

Sinus infection or sinusitis is inflammation of the sinuses. Sinuses are the hollow cavities in the bones around the nose. When these sinuses get inflamed because of some viral or fungal infection, it results in blockage of air or mucus inside, which causes lot of pain and discomfort, often known as a sinus attack. Sinus infections are very common and millions of people are attacked each year.

If you are more used on vitamin/mineral supplements, here are several recommendations for immune system support: Vitamin C: 500 mg every two hours; Bioflavonoids: 1000 mg per day ; Vitamin A: 5,000 IU per day; Beta-carotene: 25,000 IU per day; Vitamin E: 400 IU per day ; Zinc: 30-50mg per day.

Sinusitis is generally caused by a cold or an allergy. When a cold or allergy takes place, swelling of the sinus cavity lining occurs. When bacteria enter the sinus cavities, they attack the swollen lining which then causes greater inflammation. The cilia usually flushes out the bacteria and mucus. When this amount of inflammation occurs, the cilia can no longer function as it should and so the bacteria and mucus end up becoming trapped in the cavities and as a result the sinusitis infection begins.

Medication also depends on the actual cause of the sinus infection. Sometimes, sinus infections are a result of some other ailments like asthma, allergic rhinitis, allergies to fungi, primary immune deficiency, HIV infection, cystic fibrosis and others. These infections have to be treated before treating the sinusitis itself. Medication for sinusitis usually involves a decongestant to clear the sinuses, an antibiotic to fight the infection, and a pain killer. Decongestant can be in the form of tablet or nasal spray. Some chronic cases can be treated using steroids like prednisone. However, steroids are not generally preferred because of the possible side effects. Acute or chronic sinus infections may require prolonged therapies like saline nasal rinses, topical/oral decongestants, antihistamines, mucolytic agents, and intranasal corticosteroids. Sinus infections that cannot be cured by medication require surgery. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is a common surgery for enlarging the sinus openings and allowing drainage.

Today many opt for herbal medication as seem to give long lasting effect to the treatment than compared to any other treatment in which the infection re occurs.

Sinus infection is one of the leading chronic diseases in the United States. According to the National Academy on an Aging Society, it is the most common chronic condition among Americans. It is predicted that over 37 million people suffer from sinusitis and sinusitis-related conditions each year and over 13 million people visit their physician each year due to chronic sinus infection.

A sinusitis infection may start off with common cold symptoms such as runny nose, cough, and congestion. But when it is not handled right away, it can lead to much more severe problems.

Nasal sprays containing ephedrine or some similar medication will help to shrink down the swollen nasal membranes and allow the inflamed sinuses to drain. If nose drops are used, lie down with the head tilted back and the chin pointing toward the ceiling. It is best to have the head turned a little to the side that is being treated. During the acute stage, use the nasal spray or drops every for hours to relieve the pressure and to encourage drainage. However, this must not continue more that a few days, for the excessive use of these medications may cause further trouble and increased discomfort. Medicated steam inhalations are very valuable for this condition. Hot, moist packs to the face one or twice a day will also help.

In order to treat the sinus headache, the primary sinusitis inflammation has to be treated. Treatment can involve using humidifier, and other natural remedies to clear the sinusitis. If the infection is due to bacteria then antibiotics are given to clear the infection. A short period of antihistamines such as Benadryl or decongestants such as Sudafed is given to treat the symptoms. If the pain still persists then corticosteroids are prescribed to reduce the inflammation. When an allergen is causing the sinusitis break out preventive allergy therapy is used.

But, it may only take proper understanding of what sinusitis is and how it is caused to chart up the right nourishment and other healthy exercises for you to end your misery.

Goldenseal, (Hydrastis Canadensis) helps to lessen inflammation of the mucous membranes, such as those lining the throat, sinuses, and lungs allowing the tissues to carry on their defensive role.

Imagine yourself not being able to appreciate the beauty of a new day'and being cranky enough not to get on well with your workmates' good-natured conversations'or not being able to join a special friend in a date --- All because of sinusitis!

Sinusitis is a term for inflammation of the lining of the sinuses and usually is caused by an allergic reaction of some sort. Common culprits are seasonal pollens, such as grass and ragweed, in addition to dust mites and pet dander. Sinusitis can also be caused by colds (viral), impaired immune systems, and even structural abnormalities of the nose and sinuses.

So when someone is as enthusiastic about his operation as Jason is, it is time to listen, especially considering his background of sinus problems. The operational procedure is called Sinu-Clear, and it uses a laser as well as an endoscope. The laser equipment also provides a steady stream of salt water to flow through the nasal passageways while the operation is taking place. There is apparently very little bleeding during the procedure, since the laser cauterizes the tissue being operated on. Because of this there is no need for nasal packing, and this is a huge positive, as those of us who have gone through a conventional operation with a scalpel and had our noses packed can attest. For me it was just awful. The endoscope allows for good viewing by the surgeon, as the camera projects a picture of the nasal cavities being worked on onto a television screen.
